アッセイとは、検体の存在、量、または機能的な活性や反応を、定性的に評価、または定量的に測定する方法のことです。バイオアッセイとは、実験動物や培養細胞などの生物材料を用いて、生物学的な反応を評価する方法のことを言います。バイオアッセイの中でも、培養細胞を用いた生物活性の測定法をセルベースアッセイと言います。 近年、動物福祉の観点から、実験動物の使用を削減するための手法として、様々なアッセイ法が開発されています。また、hPSC（ヒト多能性幹細胞）の開発により、ヒト由来細胞の利用が可能となり、セルベースアッセイの活用範囲が広がっています。 MPSを用いたアッセイは、薬効や毒性評価の予測に期待されています。
