shear stress

This refers to the force exerted by a fluid on the surface of cells or materials in the direction of flow. In flow-based culture systems, such as microfluidic devices and bioreactors, this force arises from gradients in flow velocity and serves as a critical physical stimulus for cells. In applications such as perfusion culture and organ-on-a-chip systems, the application of appropriate shear stress is essential for constructing experimental systems that closely mimic biological conditions.
